I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing

Our baby graduated college and moved home with big aspirations to go to law school next year. It’s so good for this Momma’s heart to spend more time with her. I miss having my children at home. That season feels like it went so fast. I love spending time with my kids!

After a long day, I sat down on the couch to cuddle up next to my daughter for a few minutes now that she is back home. She was deeply engrossed in a documentary about the Titanic. I really didn’t pay much attention. It was more like background noise for me. I just wanted to sit next to her. I had my computer on my lap and was continuing to comb through endless emails to try and get a jump start on the next day.

I heard “God,” and suddenly my ears perked up. What was playing on the television wasn’t background noise anymore. I asked my daughter what they just said on TV and asked if her if she would rewind it. She repeated it to me, “The three most recognizable words world-wide are God, Coca Cola, and Titanic”. That sure is an interesting trio. I would not have guessed that. Would you have?

I instantly thought of a quote I heard once, “A soft-drink company in Atlanta has done a better job getting brown sugar water to these people than the Church of Jesus Christ has done in getting the Gospel to them.” That’s enough to make you gulp!

Coca Cola sure has done a great job of becoming a household name. When I think of Coke, I think of the iconic commercial from the 1970’s with the jingle, “I’d Like to Buy the World a Coke,” or some know it as, “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing!” It’s a commercial of unity, and it quickly gained popularity as it was released toward the end of the Vietnam Era. You may even hear some folks humming that recognizable jingle now over 50 years later.

But what about God? We know about the global obsession with Coca Cola, and this documentary clearly defined the great fascination with the Titanic—the luxury ocean liner used for transportation that sank on its maiden voyage in 1912. We have covered two of the three most world-wide, recognizable words with Titanic and Coca Cola, but what about God?

I know the world may recognize the word “God,” but the word has become watered down and diluted and used in a general, generic context. Do we recognize the One True God? The Bible is clear there is only one True God. Read it for yourself!

John 17:3-4, “And this is eternal life, that they know You, the Only True God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. I glorified You on earth, having accomplished the work that You gave me to do” (ESV).
Jeremiah 10:10-11, “But the Lord is the True God; He is the Living God and the Everlasting King. At His wrath the earth quakes, and the nations cannot endure His indignation. Thus shall you say to them: ‘The gods who did not make the heavens and the earth shall perish from the earth and from under the heavens’” (ESV).
Isaiah 45:5-7, “I am the Lord, and there is no other, besides Me there is no God; I equip you, though you do not know Me, that people may know, from the rising of the sun and from the west, that there is none besides Me; I am the Lord, and there is no other. I form light and create darkness; I make well-being and create calamity; I am the Lord, who does all these things” (ESV).
1 Corinthians 8:4-6, “Therefore, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that ‘an idol has no real existence,’ and that ‘there is no God but One.’ For although there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth—as indeed there are many ‘gods’ and many ‘lords’— yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist” (ESV).

The Bible warns us there are many gods, thus the world recognizes a universal term as quickly as they recognize Coca Cola. But there is undeniably only One True God, the Father and Maker of Heaven and earth, and only One Lord, Jesus Christ.

Philippians 2:8-11 brings even further clarity, “And being found in human form, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in Heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (ESV).

The answer to teaching the world to sing in perfect harmony is through Jesus Christ! One day every knee will bow, and every tongue will confess Jesus Christ is the Lord. One day the most recognizable word in every nation and language will be Jesus. One day, everyone will see Jesus.

Will you live now to make the name of Jesus famous because of what He sacrificed for you and for the world? Will you not let a day go by without worshipping Jesus, seeking Him, and telling others about Him? Will you live now to make Jesus Christ the most recognizable name in your neighborhood, community, workplace, city, school, stadiums, state, country, other nations, human history, and on planet earth? Who will you share with first today?
