If you feel a tug to share the Gospel with family but are not sure where to start, you are not alone. Many believers want to love their closest people well and point them to Jesus, yet it can feel complex, personal, and high stakes. The good news is you can keep it simple, be led by the Holy Spirit, and take real steps that open hearts at home. In this guide, I’ll show you practical ways to pray, live, and speak so you can confidently share the Gospel with family and friends, with grace and clarity.
Why This Moment Matters
What an exciting season of history we are in! As revival continues to sweep across the globe, more and more people are looking for ways to share the Gospel with family and friends who don’t know Christ.
According to a 2022 study from Lifeway Research, 66% of Christians are not familiar with any methods for telling others about Jesus. The majority of Christians do not know how to share the Gospel with family. In addition, researchers determined only 52% of Christians have shared a God-Story, explaining what God has done in their life with a friend or family member who is not a Christian in the last six months. Those statistics are changing as people continue to step up to share the Gospel!
It may feel complicated and even overwhelming, but there are ways to share the Gospel with family and keep it simple!
My Story: From No Faith to New Life
I did not grow up in a Christian home and did not surrender my life to Christ until I was 27 years old! That’s a long time to live without Christ. When I finally heard the Good News and committed to live a life for Jesus, it looked radical to my family. But honestly, when you do a 180-degree turn and go from living without God to living for God, your life should look different! I was different—for the better. For many years, individuals within my family were living lives without true purpose—it was a life without God at the center.
When my family saw the immediate change in me after I received Christ as my Savior, they knew something was different. I had a passion for Christ and profound purpose in life. Many of my friends and family wanted the newfound love, joy, and peace I had discovered through surrendering my life to Christ. My life changed forever because someone else shared the Gospel with me. It was my turn to share the Gospel with my family and friends.
Two Core Ways to Reach Loved Ones
After I surrendered my life to Christ, the first thing I wanted to do was to share the Gospel with my family, friends, and loved ones! I quickly understood I would best accomplish this two ways:
- Immediately share my God-Story and God encounters with them.
- Practice lifestyle evangelism. I knew people were watching me.
Christ died on the cross, was buried, and rose again for my sins, and accepting Him as Lord and Savior of my life changed everything for me. Now it was time to live out what I believed! I wanted to pay it forward and multiply the movement. Shortly after, I witnessed my sister, mother, father, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, father-in-law, children, husband, friends, neighbors, and even strangers give their lives to Christ!
Practical Ways to Share the Gospel with Family and Friends
1— Pray by Name and Ask for Open Doors
- Pray for others by name.
- Ask God to soften their hearts to receive His love and grace.
- Pray for boldness and clear moments to share your story and His salvation message.
2— Stay Fueled: Word, Worship, and Community
- Read your Bible.
- Attend a Bible-believing church.
- Stay in community with other Christians who will encourage you to share.
3— Learn the Romans Road for Clarity. Review key Scriptures that explain our need for Jesus and the hope of salvation:
- Romans 3:23
- Romans 6:23
- Romans 5:8
- Romans 10:9-11
4— Let Your Life Speak
- Live for Christ with a heart on fire and a life on purpose.
- Reflect Jesus in your choices, words, and habits.
- When people see the change in you, they will want to know more.
5— Listen First, Then Speak
- Take time to ask how others are doing.
- Pause and truly listen.
- When they know you care, they will be more open to hearing you.
6— Encourage and Pray On the Spot
- Share Scriptures as you talk.
- Offer to pray right then. Many people will say, “Thank you! I needed that.”
7— Share Your God Stories in 2–3 Minutes
- Tell what your life was like before Jesus.
- Share what He did for you.
- Explain how your life is different now.
- Practice a short “elevator” testimony and keep fresh stories ready: freedom, provision, healing, guidance, and God’s faithfulness in trials.
8— Invite a Response to Jesus
Don’t leave them hanging. Many have heard about Christ but have not been lovingly invited to receive Him. Tell what Christ has done for you and ask if they would like that too. If they do, lead them in a simple prayer of repentance and faith:
Lord, I admit that I am a sinner in need of a Savior. I believe You sent Your one and only Son, Jesus Christ, to die for me and my sins. I believe You are the only way. I accept You as my Lord and Savior and choose to follow You all the days of my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
