If you are a new Christian, learning how to share your faith can feel exciting and often bubbles up naturally as you simply tell what Jesus has done in your life. The good news is that you do not need a perfect speech. All you need is a simple plan and a real story. Let me show you how easy it is to learn how to share your faith using a clear, 3-part testimony!
How to Share Your Faith as a New Christian
If you are a new Christian, I want to tell you something up front: you do not need a perfect speech, or a Bible college degree, or to know every answer in order to be able to share your faith.
You only need two things: love for people, and a simple plan.
Jesus gave us a clear mission in Mark 16:15 (ESV): “Go into all the world and proclaim the Gospel to the whole creation.” So how do you do that without being weird, forced, or awkward? Here is a simple approach that works, especially for new believers. Let me show you how to share your faith using your God-Story. And yes, you can do it in one or two minutes.
Really Seeing People (Not Treating Them Like Targets)
First, people do not want to be treated like a project—they can sense when you are talking to them like they are a problem to fix.
So, the first step of how to share your faith is not about talking; it’s about seeing.
Seeing the people around you. Stopping to connect with them and praying for them. Spending time getting to know them and doing things together. SEE, STOP, SPEND TIME WITH, and then, SHARE.
Have normal conversations, ask questions, and be interested in what they have to say.
A simple goal that helps me: talk 30 percent, listen 70 percent.
And as you listen, you will often find an opening where your story connects with their story.
The 3-Part God-Story (The Simple Testimony Format)
Once you have found that connection, share your God-Story with them! If you are learning how to share your faith, this 3-part framework is gold because it keeps you focused and clear.
1) BEFORE: What was life like before God showed up?
You do not need to make it dramatic; just be honest.
Maybe you were anxious, depressed, lonely, angry, addicted, proud, confused, trying to prove yourself, or trying to earn love.
Share the real need.
2) HOW: How did you encounter Jesus?
Where were you? What happened? What did you do?
Maybe it was a church service, a conversation with a friend, a prayer in your bedroom, a chat over coffee, or even a moment alone in your car.
Keep it simple. Share the reality of your personal experience.
3) AFTER: What changed?
This is the power of your story.
Maybe you went from fear to courage, from anxiety to peace, from shame to forgiveness, from isolation to belonging, or from being stuck to being free.
This 3-part pattern is one of the easiest ways to learn how to share your faith because it is your real life. Nobody can argue with what God has done in your life.
A Quick Example God-Story
Here is an example that is close to my own story:
Growing up, I was full of fear, anxiety, and worry, and honestly, full of pride too. I was a mess. I tried to live my own way and thought it would satisfy me. But it did not. I felt alone, and I got so low, I was even considering ending it all.
One night, I remember sitting in the closet of my childhood bedroom in despair, and I thought, “Maybe I should do what I have heard my whole life. Maybe I should pray to Jesus.” So I did. I asked Him to intervene.
And He did.
I went from desperately lonely to deeply satisfied. My depression was replaced with joy. I went from being too afraid to even say hello to someone at a lunch table to someone willing to speak about Jesus.
That is what He does.
So yes, you can learn how to share your faith, and you can do it in a way that looks like you.
After the Story: Share the Gospel (In One Clear Minute)
Right after your God-Story, add a simple explanation of the Good News.
You might say something like:
“This was possible in my life because Jesus died on the cross for the sins that separated us from God. He rose from the dead, which means He is alive today. He loves you, and He wants a relationship with you.”
Scripture gives you solid ground here:
- Romans 5:8 (ESV): “But God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
- 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 (ESV): “Christ died for our sins… He was buried… He was raised on the third day…”
This is a key part of how to share your faith: keep the Gospel clear. God loves us. Sin separates us from God. Jesus died to bring us back God. Jesus rose from the dead and is alive. Jesus loves us.
End with a Question (This Changes Everything)
Don’t just talk at someone; bring them into the conversation.
Ask a question like:
- “Is this something you are interested in?”
- “Do you want God to do something like this in your life too?”
- “Would you like to follow Jesus?”
This is part of learning how to share your faith that many people skip, but it matters. A question invites a response.
And when you ask, you will usually hear one of three answers.
The 3 Responses You Will Hear (And What to Do)
Response 1: “I’m ready to follow Jesus.”
Do not delay; pray with them right then.
Romans 10:9 (ESV): “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
You can say, “Pray in your own words, but here is a simple start: ‘Jesus, I believe you died for my sin and rose from the dead. Today I want to follow you.’”
Response 2: “I’m not interested.”
Don’t argue. Keep loving them.
Pray, serve, stay kind, and stay real. Over time, God can soften hearts.
Remember, how to share your faith is not the same as how to win a debate. You are planting seeds.
Response 3: “I’m interested, but not ready.”
Great. That is not failure; that is openness.
Invite them to meet regularly and explore who Jesus is. Read Bible stories together. Let them ask questions. If you do not know an answer, say, “Let’s find out together.”
A Real Moment That Still Shakes Me
One time, my wife and I were at a restaurant with the president of our ministry. Our server bumped into him. She forgot ice in his sweet tea. She was having a rough day.
And I felt scared to death to say anything about Jesus.
But I took a small step. I said, “Ma’am, this might sound a little weird, but right now the Lord Jesus Christ is thinking about you, and He thinks you are awesome.”
She gasped and walked away, but a moment later bent over a counter and started weeping. Afterward, she wrote me a letter.
It said she had bought equipment to take her life the next day, and when I said God was thinking about her, it was the first time she understood who He really is. She gave her life to Jesus right there.
That moment reminds me why learning how to share your faith matters. You never know what someone is carrying when they walk up to your table, your desk, your front porch, or your checkout line.
You Are God’s Plan for Reaching the World
So let me ask you:
Who has God placed in your life right now?
A neighbor? A coworker? A family member? A friend who is hurting?
You don’t need to be perfect. You just need to be available.
If you want a simple challenge, here it is:
- Pray: “Jesus, help me really see people.”
- Prepare your 60-second God-Story (Before, How, After).
- Look for one moment this week to practice how to share your faith.
You can do this—and God will meet you in it.
Your God-Story is the one thing nobody can argue with—but it gets much easier to tell once you have written it down. Grab our free guide, How to Write Your Testimony, and walk through the Before, the How, and the After one step at a time.
