Stay In Your Lane

May 1, 2026

I was driving down a winding, country road recently in my rental car as I headed to the next ministry event. There were no white lines on the pavement, only a double yellow line to separate oncoming traffic around the curves and a broken yellow line on the straight-aways, indicating I could pass if I needed to. To help make sure I didn’t get too far onto the gravel shoulder of the road, I hugged the yellow line tighter than I probably should have. Suddenly, I realized I was now too far left by the yellow line! How did I know? Good question! The lane assist driving aid of the rental car went off with a beeping alarm and my steering wheel started vibrating simultaneously warning me to stay in my lane. All this was happening as the car suddenly started automatically veering away from the double yellow line back to the center of the narrow lane.

The alarm worked! I was alarmed. My older, 13-year-old car doesn’t have all these new bells, whistles, beeps, and buzzers! The technology in my car is a little out-of-date. I learned that with the lane assist safety feature, cameras are strategically placed on the car to read the white and yellow lines on the road and assist in alerting drivers when the car is about to cross a lane boundary. Before the vehicle crosses the line, the system, when engaged, will take over the wheel to swiftly but safely move you back to the center of your lane.

Admittedly, I made the alarms go off more than once or twice while driving these back roads. You would think I would have started singing, the Carrie Underwood song, “Jesus Take the Wheel!”

I kept driving the narrow pavement in the dark countryside, where streetlights were non-existent. I was alert and awake but not used to the narrow lanes that were winding around all the lakes and ponds. Finally, after the lane-assist system activated yet again, I recognized it as an alarm from Heaven for me. It was time to talk to Jesus again.

I prayed and asked God, “How many times throughout my life have I veered and not stayed in the lane You put before me? Do I swerve and get off track?” I continued to ask God to help me and teach me in that moment as I did my best to stay centered in the lane? Have you ever considered the times when you may have veered off track with God? Sometimes, it can happen in a blink of an eye.

When I was first learning to drive my parents taught me this: When you look to the left, you veer to the left. And when you look to the right, you veer to the right. We will begin to travel in the direction we are looking. It can be easy to become distracted if we have wandering eyes. Spiritually speaking, we are to keep our eyes on Jesus, like we are to keep our eyes on the road when driving!

Proverbs 4:25-27 encourages us, “Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you. Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure. Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil” (ESV).

I read this Proverb again and began to search my soul. May I ask you the same things I began to ask myself? Are your eyes fixed on Jesus? Is your gaze straight before you? Do you ponder the path you are on to ensure you are staying in the center of God’s will? Are you swerving, veering, or casually dabbling with things you know are not of God?

These are questions for today—not reflecting on yesterday, last month, or where we have been with God, but today as we are driving through life!

Be reminded of God’s Word, “I keep my eyes always on the LORD. With Him at my right hand, I will not be shaken” (Psalm 16:8, NIV).

Stay centered in God and rooted in His Word with your eyes always on Him as you navigate this life. Unexpected business, interruptions, exhaustion, emergencies, busyness and so much more will be ever before us as we navigate the road God has us on. Don’t focus on distractions competing for your attention. Stay focused on Jesus! Only He will keep you centered! Sing it with me…”Jesus take the wheel!”
