There was so much emphasis wrapped up in the way she said the name of Jesus. I remember, when I had sleepovers at her home as a young child, she would walk around her home singing His name or be out in her garden picking string beans or shucking corn and singing His name. She sang the ol’ 1970 Bill and Gloria Gaither song, “There’s Something About That Name.” You may know the song. If so…this may bring back memories. It went like this: “…Jesus, Jesus, Jesus. There’s just something about that name. Master, Savior, Jesus. Like the fragrance after the rain. Jesus, Jesus, Jesus. Let all Heaven and Earth proclaim. Kings and kingdoms will all pass away. But there’s something about that name.”
Oh, the sweet name of Jesus. Have you said His name recently—and more than simply when you may stub your toe? When is the last time Jesus has heard you call upon His name?
God, our Father, named Jesus. We hear about it in the book of Luke when an angel of the Lord meets with Mary. I know there was intentionality given when He declared and pronounced His name.
Luke 1:30-33 says, “Then the angel told her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Now listen: You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name Him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His Kingdom will have no end” (CSB).
His name was to be called Jesus, and He would be great and called the Son of the Most High. He will reign forever and His Kingdom will never end. What a triumphant declaration and perfect name given for our perfect Lord.
God also made it clear as He spoke to Joseph in a dream in Matthew 1. Matthew 1:20-24 says, “But after he had considered these things, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, don’t be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because what has been conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to name Him Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.” Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: See, the virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and they will name Him Immanuel, which is translated “God is with us.” When Joseph woke up, he did as the Lord’s angel had commanded him. He married her but did not have sexual relations with her until she gave birth to a son. And he named Him Jesus” (CSB).
“And he named Him Jesus!” “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus…There’s just something about that name!”
The name Jesus appears approximately 924 times in the ESV Bible, and Jesus, Christ or Christian occurs 1,453 times. It’s a name worth knowing and surrendering to and a name worth repeating. Jesus, the Greek form of Hebrew Joshua, means “Yahweh saves!” He is continually referred to as Jesus, Lord, Immanuel, Emmanuel or Christ.
Living in this broken, fallen world where sin abounds and the name of Jesus is continually slandered, defamed, and spoken in vain, we as Christians can take a stand for Jesus and declare…”There’s just something about that name.” What does the name of Jesus mean to you personally? What is it about His name that makes you long to say it?
