Recently, I had the privilege to have lunch with some friends and catch up on life and all God was doing in our hearts and lives. I heard about the call of God on one of them to go to Africa for a short-term mission trip and the incredible opportunities awaiting her. Another shared about what the Lord was doing with a discipleship training program as he helped train and equip disciples in various churches around the city! It was a power-packed lunch!
They turned the conversation over to me and asked what the Lord was doing in my heart and what He was asking of me.
I fumbled my way through the conversation as everything was still so new and fresh. I shared with them the big-picture concept of a 90-day devotional titled, Monumental Moments, Unexpected Encounters with God. It was a concept and calling I had been wrestling with. I had never written a book, nor did I set out on a mission to write a book. I was simply writing devotionals to help encourage fellow believers. But the Lord was calling me to more.
There is so much to learn when you are stepping out in faith in unknown territory. I knew God was asking me to step up, but I didn’t know how. I articulated my journey and season as best as I could.
They leaned across the table and asked, “What do you need?” I said, “I don’t know! I don’t know what I don’t know!” They chuckled and leaned over and repeatedly asked, “What do you need?”
I knew I should have had an answer, but I didn’t. I was stepping out in blind faith and trying to figure out the process along the way.
Weeks later, as I began to get a better understanding of the process, I explained to my husband something along these lines: “Do you know when you hear about people scuba diving and understand it’s a fun, recreational sport, but until you physically do it, you have no idea how complex the process is, or the type of equipment that is required, or the credentialling that you need? And the same holds true with sailing. You understand the concept of sailing a boat, but you have no idea of the terms, the varying conditions that impact the process, and the cost and maintenance involved with a boat? I feel like that’s what I am discovering with publishing a book. There is so much more behind the book. There are needs I did not know existed.”
In the story we read above regarding Jesus and His triumphal entry, He knew what He needed. He knew who to ask, what to ask for, and He clearly articulated what He needed.
We are not Jesus. We will not have all the answers. But because of Jesus’ death on the cross and resurrection, we have the Holy Spirit who will guide us through the journey God is calling us to. It’s our responsibility like the disciples to step out in faith, even when we don’t have everything we need at the moment. We simply need to look to God.
I made a mistake in the process. Knowing the Lord called me toward a project of authoring a book, I stepped out in faith and began. But I did not initially ask the Lord for guidance, and “what I needed.” I fumbled a bit in the process trying to figure things out on my own. If God calls you to something, He will guide you in the journey. He is not asking you to take this journey alone. Do you know He wants to be with you in the process? He will help guide you into what you need.
The key is to keep coming back to God to ask for: wisdom, discernment, direction, peace, resources, connections, and guidance. As He gives you clarity, like Jesus gave the disciples on what was needed, you will be able to clearly articulate your needs so others can come with you and help you in the journey!
It reminds me of Habakkuk 2:2-3 when the Lord gives direction to write out the vision and make it plain to people that anyone who reads it can run with the vision. Follow God’s lead.
What is God asking of you? Take time to write out the dreams He is placing in your heart! Make them clear. What do you need? Can you clearly articulate it? Ask the Lord to put people in your path that can help you accomplish His will!
