Are You Just Saying the Words—or Are You Living the Life?
Let me ask you: When was the last time you stopped, really stopped, and thought about why you pray? Why you say certain words, at certain times, in certain places? Is prayer something that comes alive for you, or is it just something you do because, well, you were taught to do it that way?
I ask because, not so long ago, I found myself asking these questions, too. Growing up in Stillwater, Oklahoma, I was the new kid from Ethiopia. Every morning we would stand in the classroom to say the Pledge of Allegiance. I remembered the words, but I didn’t grasp the meaning. It was tradition—pure and simple. It’s what you did before class started.
I realized years later that for many of us, prayer ends up in that same category. We treat it like a routine. Like the national anthem before the game. A checkbox. A habit that has little to do with what matters most—meeting with God, connecting with Him, seeing life through His eyes.
But it doesn’t have to stay that way.
Relational Prayer: More Than Just Words
Jesus never modeled prayer as something you do on autopilot. He didn’t give us prayer so we’d treat it like a good luck charm, a quick “thanks for the meal,” or just another tradition passed down. He showed us something radical: prayer as relationship with God. Prayer as the engine, not the ornament, of daily life.
He prayed everywhere, all the time. On hillsides, in crowded homes, before meals, and after miracles. Jesus prayed, not as an event, but as a way of breathing.
Let’s get honest for a moment. How often do you pause, stop the swirl, and really engage in relational prayer? Talking to God not because you have to, but because you get to? This is the invitation: to move beyond reciting prayers, and to become someone who lives a lifestyle of relational prayer.
From Routine to Real—Learning by Doing
So how do you make the shift? How does relational prayer become the way you live, not just something you do? Jesus offers us a picture. In Luke 11, the disciples see Him praying and ask, “Lord, teach us to pray.” They want more than a method—they want the life of God they see in Him.
I remember a friend of mine, the best Domino player in the country, ranked number one by ESPN—and, believe it or not, a fantastic preacher. At a youth conference, students crowded around him, hungry to learn to play like he played.
He didn’t just explain the rules. He set up a table. He made us practice. He drilled us in strategy. He looked at us and said, “You’ll never get to my level just by learning the game. You get there by actually playing.”
Isn’t that how relational prayer works? You don’t become a person of relational prayer by reading about it or watching someone else. You get there by doing it—daily, honestly, persistently talking to God.
How to Pray Daily—And Why Practice Makes All the Difference
You already know: no one gets strong by visiting the gym once a month. No musician becomes amazing by picking up the instrument only when they’re inspired. It’s consistency that shapes us and maintains relationships. Relational prayer is the same. It thrives on rhythm, repetition, and intention.
You may start by setting aside five quiet minutes each morning—or just whispering a prayer as you make coffee. Maybe it’s while commuting, or before responding in frustration. Each time you pause to pray, purposely connecting with God, you’re building a lifestyle of prayer, not routine.
Practice doesn’t mean perfection. It means presence. Show up. Keep going. Each day, relational prayer deepens your relationship with God. Each moment spent in honest conversation shifts your spiritual center.
The Power of Living as People of Prayer
Here’s what’s at stake: God has given you access to all His abundance, like a giant reservoir of heavenly resources. He’s storing up goodness, wisdom, healing, answers for you—and He invites you to connect with Him and His provision through relational prayer.
He has set some things in place you cannot change (His unconditional will). But there are many things God is waiting to release as you ask, seek, and persist (His conditional will). Prayer is the bridge.
When you live as a person of relational prayer, you carry God’s presence into every situation. You don’t just pray about life; you let God shape your life through prayer. You move from hoping God hears you once in a while, to knowing He’s walking with you moment by moment. You see that He wants to connect with you even more than you want to connect with Him.
Signs You’re Leaving Routine Prayer Behind
- Prayer starts feeling like real conversation with God, not forced.
- You find yourself praying anywhere, anytime—not just at set times.
- The thought of talking to God brings comfort, joy, and confidence.
- You’re more aware of God’s presence and what He’s doing in your life.
If this doesn’t describe you yet, don’t give up. Remember, relationships grow as you keep going over time. Connecting with God through relational prayer is the same way.
A Serious Call—to a Simple Starting Point
Maybe you’ve treated prayer as a habit, tradition, or a kind of insurance policy—just in case you need a miracle. Today, you have a choice. You can step into a lifestyle of connecting with God through relational prayer, one step at a time, making prayer as natural as breathing.
Don’t settle for routine. The world does not need more people who simply go through the motions. Start living the relational prayer life Jesus modeled and live your life with God like never before.
Take the First Step Toward Lifestyle Prayer
Ask yourself, right now: Where have I treated prayer as a routine event, rather than a relationship? How can I invite God into my day, again and again? He is waiting and longing to meet with you!
Begin today. Practice. Fail and try again. Keep at it. Before you know it, relational prayer will stop feeling like something you do and become the way you live.
