A Signature Scent

January 8, 2026

I traveled with my husband to Europe for one of his work trips years ago. One thing that stood out to me as we traveled throughout various countries: fragrances were everywhere. I still remember all the smells. I would compare it to walking past a perfume counter in a department store! Stores, trains, and bakeries all had a mixture of everyone’s favorite scent.

I learned that fragrance is deeply rooted in the European culture. There are parfums and colognes leaving their trail everywhere. I didn’t realize there was a difference. Parfum can contain 20-30% aromatic oils which is the strongest of fragrances, perfumes are less concentrated with as little as 15% of aromatic compounds, and colognes offer a concentration of only 2-4% oil. If you want something potent that lasts awhile, stick with parfum!

Is there a fragrance that is undeniable that you can identify instantly? Have you ever walked into a hotel or store and smelled a signature fragrance throughout the place that is specific to their brand or products? How about smelling fragrances on people? Have you passed by a man with a distinctly recognizable classic cologne like Stetson, Polo by Ralph Lauren, or Drakkar Noir or even Old Spice after-shave? Or have you walked through a scent cloud a woman leaves behind as she walks past you wearing Chanel N°5, Prada, or Valentino Donna Born in Roma? I certainly am not the person who can identify exact brands and fragrances, but I can recognize familiar smells and costly perfume! Some fragrances just simply smell expensive!

People and locations with recognizable fragrances are said to have their own “signature scent.” If you have a signature scent, it’s a fragrance that is “unmistakably you” and is often associated with your identity by those closest to you.

My husband travels often for work and tries to stay loyal to a particular hotel brand. He likes the familiarity, knows what to expect, and he also enjoys the perks and points that come with his growing number of stays. He is comforted upon his arrival by the distinguishable smell that is widely used throughout his preferred hotel chain. It’s identifiable and to him, smells like his home away from home as he enters the building. The fragrance he is familiar with has a unique blend of citrus and woody notes. The formula was created to generate a sophisticated and refreshing scent. As you enter the facility you are greeted with an undeniable familiar welcome every time by this signature scent!

Did you realize your prayers to the Father have the same impact? Follow along with me as we review scriptures on prayer that the Lord receives from us:

  • “God, come close. Come quickly! Open your ears—it’s my voice you’re hearing! Treat my prayer as sweet incense rising; my raised hands are my evening prayers. (Psalm 141:1-2, MSG)!
  • “And he went and took the scroll from the right hand of Him who was seated on the throne. And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints,” (Revelation 5:7-8, ESV).
  • “When the Lamb opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. Then I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them. And another angel came and stood at the altar with a golden censer, and he was given much incense to offer with the prayers of all the saints on the golden altar before the throne, and the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, rose before God from the hand of the angel,” (Revelation 8:1-4, ESV).

King David asked God to receive his prayers like sweet incense rising before Him. In the book of Revelation, it describes creatures and elders holding golden bowls full of incense that are the prayers of the saints. Later we read again in the book of Revelation about an eighth angel who stood at the altar with a golden vessel. He was given a great amount of incense to offer on the golden altar before the throne with the prayers of all the saints. The smoke of the incense with the prayers of the saints rose before God directly from the hand of the angel.

Our prayers are filling golden vessels in heaven as incense before the Lord and His throne. I believe there is an undeniable, fragrant aroma that is associated with our prayers that the Lord can identify. It may not be like what we know it with sweet or woody smells, but they must be heavenly before the Almighty God!

So, what are you praying for? What offering of prayers are you stockpiling in golden vessels? What prayerful fragrance and incense are you contributing in heaven?

Here are a few prayers you can focus on:

  • A thankful heart for Jesus Christ
  • God’s will to be done
  • An understanding of God’s Word
  • Repentance in areas you have fallen short
  • Forgiveness toward others
  • Salvation of lost souls
  • Kingdom Advancement through continued work of laborers around the world
  • Wisdom to navigate life and circumstances with God’s perspective
  • Generosity with your resources
  • Joy in your journey
  • God’s mercy
  • Healing over your body and others
  • Fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control).
  • Open doors for God’s advancement

If this seems too much, simply start with the Lord’s Prayer in the Bible in Matthew 6:5-14 and follow Jesus’ prayer.

What will your prayer fragrance be unto the Lord? You will have your individual signature scent and will help also make up part of the overall incense of the prayer of the saints!
