Always Kiss Me Goodnight

July 31, 2025

Have you heard the phrase, “Always Kiss Me Goodnight”? It’s a popular saying that has made its way on many home décor pieces. It’s a simple reminder of a lovely, little evening gesture.

I have a fun story to share with you that comes from a credible and reliable source—my mom, wink, wink! She had to have a routine procedure done at a medical facility recently that required being put under general anesthesia. She arrived at the facility, checked in, completed the necessary paperwork, and was taken back to prepare for the procedure. Then, she waited.

As the procedure got closer, the medical staff invited my dad2 (Mom’s new husband, since my father passed away) to move from the waiting room into the pre-operative room with Mom. They waited patiently together until it was time to move her into the operating room on her bed-on-wheels. Then, Dad2 leaned down to “kiss her goodnight” before she was administered the general anesthesia to go into a light sleep for her routine surgery.

Mom observantly noticed the smirk on the medical assistant’s face. With no filter, she called him out on it. She said, “What are you smirking at?” He chuckled and explained—the days tend to become mundane in the world of routine medical procedures, so medical professionals will often play mind games with themselves. He further explained, they will try and guess certain behaviors or reactions to routine situations based on the first impressions of the people they encounter! What on earth could he be trying to guess?

Mom proceeded to grill him. She asked, “What were you questioning with us?” In this case, the man was trying to decide if Dad2 would kiss Mom before she was wheeled back for the procedure? Winner, winner, chicken dinner as some would say! He was right. Dad2 kissed her and said, “I love you,” before they took her back for the procedure!

It was a beautiful gesture for this married couple and another win for the medical professional who guessed correctly.

The simple gesture of a kiss can be special and precious. It can reflect the love of Christ. There is such beauty in the first kiss after the declaration of completed wedding vows of a bride and groom or the kissing of a newborn baby as the child enters the world.

The Bible has several references to the action of a kiss throughout the Old and New Testaments. As we unwrap the Word of God like unwrapping a rich, creamy Hershey’s Kiss chocolate candy from the shiny, silver foil, we become more and more mindful of God’s references to a simple kiss that goes beyond the surface level of the action itself.

Let’s look at a few verses in the Bible:

  • Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth—for your love is more delightful than wine.” Song of Solomon 1:2, NIV
  • Love and faithfulness meet together; righteousness and peace kiss each other.Psalm 85:10, NIV
  • Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ.” 1 Peter 5:14, NIV
  • An honest answer is like a kiss on the lips.” Proverbs 24:26, NIV

As I think more about this interesting occasion in a pre-op room before surgery, I think of God’s extravagant, consistent, and endless love for us that not only we can feel, but that others can clearly see. Do people see the love of God when they see you? Do they know something is different? They are certainly watching you.

Watching the consistent love of a married couple beyond a wedding day and well into their marriage is a gentle reminder of God’s beautiful love. He is always lovingly by our side. God’s love is gentle and all consuming. The Bible reminds us that God loves us with an everlasting love. I love how we read in Song of Solomon that the love of this couple is more delightful than wine.

As you consider the scriptures listed above, are there reassurances and promises of God’s love that speak directly to your heart?  If so, consider it a Kiss from Heaven!

May you always know the love the Father has for you. He is there with you every moment of everyday. His love is constant and faithful—even if you don’t always feel it. He promises He will never leave you or forsake you. He is there with you as you are sleeping, there when you awake, and He is there in the evenings to “Always Hug or Kiss You Goodnight!”

Have you acknowledged His presence today? Don’t leave Him waiting! He loves you.
