Belonging to the King

Last week, we explored the four Greek words for servant in the New Testament: doulos, latreuo, diakonos, and huperetes. Each word shows a different way to serve God as Kingdom Laborers. Today, we focus on doulos, which means bondservant—a servant who willingly belongs fully to their master.

 

When Paul calls himself a doulos of Christ Jesus, he is not just describing what he does; he is saying who he is. His whole life now belongs to Jesus: every choice, every action, every moment is His. Paul’s life shows how being a doulos works in everyday life. Even in hardship, imprisonment, and rejection, he remembered that he belonged to Christ. His confidence did not come from what he could do, but from the One who called him. We, as Kingdom Laborers, are invited into this same kind of life, trusting that our value and purpose come from belonging fully to Jesus.

 

So, what does this mean practically? It means listening for God’s guidance and responding, even in small ways. This might look like pausing before reacting in a hard moment, following God’s guidance in a choice, helping when He nudges you, or choosing humility in a moment when it would be easy to promote ourselves. These actions flow naturally from knowing we are His. They are not about duty or earning favor, but about trusting and following Him.

 

As we approach Good Friday, the day when we remember Jesus’ death on the cross for our sins, we see the ultimate example of doulos in His life. From the quiet moments in the upper room, where He shared one last meal with His disciples, to His suffering on the cross, He trusted the Father completely. He gave Himself over to death. Good Friday reminds us of the depth of His love and surrender. Resurrection Sunday (Easter), the day we celebrate Jesus rising from the dead, shows the hope and joy that come when He triumphs over death, giving new life to all who follow Him.

 

Being a doulos is not about being perfect or earning God’s love. It is about choosing to trust Him, follow His guidance, and serve others when He calls. In small daily actions and bigger moments of obedience, we reflect the upside-down greatness of God’s Kingdom—lives fully given to the One who gives life and hope.
