Have you ever noticed how easy it is to memorize song lyrics? They just have a way of naturally sticking around to quickly recite. Oh, if only I would be as intentional about memorizing Scripture as quickly as I can memorize song lyrics set to music.
There is another song that similarly reminds us about the many miracles in our lives. It was written by Elevation Worship and Maverick City Music. The chorus says, “I’ve got miracles on miracles. A million little miracles. Miracles on miracles. Count your miracles. One, two, three, four, I can’t even count ’em all. Miracles on miracles. A million little miracles. Miracles on miracles. Count your miracles. One, two, three, four, I can’t even count ’em all.”
We all have so many blessings from God that it can become easy to lose count of them all. Throughout the Old Testament, God’s people would put up physical stones of remembrance to help them never forget God’s faithfulness. They created visual reminders of God’s miracles, blessings, and promises.
Can you remember some of the occasions mentioned in the Bible? I had to do some digging to remember more. Joshua created a memorial with twelve stones for the people of Israel to remember how God stopped the water and helped them to cross the Jordan River with the Ark of the Covenant. We read about it in Joshua 4. In Genesis 28 Jacob took the stone that was his pillow for the night and set it as a pillar to mark the encounter he had with God in that place the night before. He renamed the location Bethel, which was formerly known as Luz. 1 Samuel 7 helps us remember when Samuel set up a stone he called Ebenezer between Mizpah and Shen to mark the moment God helped the Israelites defeat the Philistines. Blessings, miracles, and encounters with God should be marking moments for us that we never want to forget. Regardless of our circumstances or situations, God keeps piling on the miracles in our lives.
Psalm 68:19 says, “Blessed be the Lord, Who daily loads us with benefits, The God of our salvation! Selah” (NKJV).
As a child of God, you are being blessed by the Lord every single day. Has it been a while since you have taken an inventory count? I’ll bet you know how much money is in your bank account! Are you aware of the blessings and miracles God has gifted you?
Let’s do this the good ol’ fashioned way and put pen to paper. Grab a pen and paper or notebook and start writing. Not later today, but right now. It’s time to count your blessings! Write out the blessings and miracles you have seen in your life and give the Lord Jesus Christ all the glory, honor, and praise. Start with the blessings and miracles that come to mind first, then ask God to help you remember other blessings that you may have forgotten. Keep a journal and count your blessings. Take it a step further and go beyond counting your blessings. Thank God for your blessings too!
