Cruisin’

August 14, 2025

It was another 5 am wake up call. We spent time reading our Bible and praying and then prepared to head to the gym before the demands of the day quickly hit. After our devotional time, we started out the day as usual with our morning routine of filling water bottles, taking vitamins, and grabbing our earphones and gym bag. Then, it was off to the gym—same road, around the same time as most other mornings. We really are getting to be creatures of habit as we get older.

As we were cruisin’ down the County Road about 50 mph, we noticed police lights and unusual activity revolving around a pickup truck ahead. We slowed down to change lanes, cross the double yellow line, and drive around the man-made barricade.

Though the sun was barely up, someone was having a very bad day already. A man in his work truck had left his tailgate down and dropped multiple boxes and loads of angled-strip, framing nails for a nail gun. It looked like a construction site in the middle of the road. There were thousands of nails scattered everywhere.

I was so thankful the man realized the load had fallen out of the truck and that he stopped and turned around to pick up the sharp, metal nails that would have done some serious damage to all four of our tires. The police officer was helping to slow traffic and re-route vehicles around the truck to bypass the unintentional, spike-strip barricade.

Our day could have taken a serious turn very quickly. As we picked up speed and momentum after passing the truck, I wondered. . . How often do we find ourselves cruising through life with our demanding agendas to be blindsided by a barricade that came out of nowhere. Have you experienced that for yourself—where you are simply going through your day to be stopped in your tracks?

The enemy is good at finding just the right time to catch us off guard. He loves to set up barricades and barriers to make us alter our course. He creatively looks for ways to challenge our faith, patience, and trust in the Lord. He delights in creating trials, tests, and temptations in our lives.

How are you responding to life’s roadblocks as you are cruising through life? Do you pray, seek God, and look for His guidance and direction? Or do you say things you will later regret? Do you act harshly toward others and get a little bent out of shape when barricades cause you to stop or re-route?

Ephesians 6:10-12 says, “Finally, be strengthened by the Lord and by His vast strength. Put on the full armor of God so that you can stand against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this darkness, against evil, spiritual forces in the heavens” (CSB).

The devil is scheming. He is rooting for you to fumble and falter. He is waiting to take the wind out of your sails and to slash all four tires. But the Good News is, God has you! You are strengthened by the Lord and by His vast strength. There is a struggle against the rulers, authorities, and spiritual forces in the heavens. The powers of darkness and evil are real and at work.

But the Lord has overcome them all! Stand strong. Be rooted and grounded in Jesus. Walk in His strength, power, and authority. Be alert, mindful, and watchful, and walk in the fullness of God’s authority. In the name of Jesus, pray for your day, your thoughts, your actions, your responses, and your agenda. Don’t be caught off guard cruisin’ through life without Jesus leading the way and directing your path!
