“What am I supposed to do with my life?”
If you’ve ever screamed that into a pillow or quietly wondered the answer while scrolling social media, you’re not alone. As a Christian teen or young adult, discovering purpose can feel like trying to solve a puzzle without the box. It’s overwhelming. It’s frustrating. And it’s one of the most searched questions by Gen Z right now.
So how do you begin discovering purpose as a Christian teen or young adult when the answers don’t seem clear? Here’s what I’ve learned from walking through that question myself—and how God used a few key moments (and a program called Forge Equipping) to help me move forward with confidence and joy.
1. Start with Jesus, Not a Career Plan
Early in college, people started asking, “So . . . what are you going to do with your degree?” I didn’t have an answer. I’d say things like, “Well, I’m sure it’ll make sense eventually,” but it didn’t—not until God shifted my focus from a career path to a Kingdom purpose.
It started with a simple moment in class. We were learning about Paul’s missionary journeys—how he traveled from city to city, made tents to pay his way, and preached the Gospel everywhere he went. That image stuck with me. Paul wasn’t chasing a five-year plan. He was just following Jesus and using what he had to share the Good News.
One verse that reshaped my view was Luke 19:10: “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” I realized Jesus had a purpose, and His purpose was people. What if that’s the same for us? What if discovering purpose as a Christian young adult isn’t about my major or my résumé—but about who I’m following?
2. Pay Attention to How God Designed You
After that, I did something I’d never really done before: I looked inward. I started asking, “What has God already given me that I could use for His Kingdom?”
At first, I felt disqualified. I was a college student. I worked at a coffee shop. I had no ministry title, no degree, and no big plan. But then I started to realize—maybe those were the very things God wanted to use. I loved people. I enjoyed deep conversations. I found joy in showing up for others. What if those passions were on purpose?
Psalm 139:13–14 says, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”
You were crafted intentionally, not accidentally. Your interests, your quirks, your passions—they’re part of God’s design. Discovering purpose as a Christian teen or young adult often starts by examining how God hard-wired you. What are the things that make you light up? What burdens your heart? What unique strengths do you have?
3. Seek Guidance from People You Trust
Once I started sensing a desire to live more intentionally for Jesus, I knew I couldn’t figure it out alone. I reached out to two mentors—people I trusted and admired for their walk with God—and shared what was stirring in me.
I told them I wanted to live with more purpose but didn’t know what step to take next. Both of them recommended a summer program called Forge Equipping—a hands-on training experience for young Christians who want to live with boldness, clarity, and passion for Jesus. One of them said something I’ll never forget: “I believe this could change the rest of your life.”
And he was right. Forge gave me a space to explore my calling, grow in my faith, and be surrounded by other young adults asking the same questions I was. It challenged me, stretched me, and helped me see that discovering purpose as a Christian young adult doesn’t have to be confusing—it just takes the right environment and community.
4. Don’t Wait Until It’s All Perfect — Just Move
This part’s tough. But it’s crucial: You can’t discover your purpose if you’re stuck in analysis paralysis. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the options, to wait until you feel “ready,” or to assume you need a sign from heaven. But sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is just start.
A friend once told me, “I wish more people would just try things. Even if it fails, you learn something.” That stuck with me. Because the truth is: God can’t steer a parked car.
Start that conversation. Apply for that program. Serve at your church. Say yes to a new opportunity. Go to Forge. Move!
Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” God has already set things in motion—you just have to take the first step.
5. Live On Purpose — Starting Today
If you’re still wondering what God’s calling you to do—that’s okay. He’s not frustrated with you. He’s inviting you to walk with Him. The steps are simple:
- Look to Jesus.
- Reflect on how He made you.
- Ask people you trust for wisdom.
- Say yes to growth and movement.
Discovering purpose as a Christian teen or young adult isn’t about figuring out your entire life right now. It’s about learning to say “yes” to God, one step at a time.
And if you’re looking for a step that could change everything—I can’t recommend Forge Equipping enough. It’s where I started walking in my purpose, and I truly believe it can be the same for you.
Your life matters. Your gifts matter. The world needs what God’s put in you. You don’t have to have it all figured out—you just need to be willing to start. Purpose isn’t something you find overnight. It’s something you grow into, step by step, as you follow Jesus.
So what are you waiting for?
