Doppelganger

January 1, 2026

I remember hearing the word “doppelganger” for the first time several years ago. “Doppel what?” I thought. Even the sound of the word was funny to me.  Someone turned to the person beside me and said,You have a doppelganger!” Then they went on to share photos with them with such excitement and explain how they know their doppelganger.

What on earth is a doppelganger? I had to research to find out. Google told me all about doppelgangers and how they are “look-alikes” or people who have facial features or mannerisms just like someone else. Doppelgangers are almost like a person’s twin outside of their family. Supposedly, in some cases, studies have found that a person’s doppelganger may even share similar DNA like bone structure, or nose shape and size, or placement and color of eyes, even though there is not a family or gene connection.

Have you ever had someone tell you that you have a doppelganger, or have you heard someone refer to a doppelganger? It’s an intriguing concept to say the least.

I heard someone use the word doppelganger again recently, and it made me think back to the first time I heard it and what a peculiar word it is. Doppel is a prefix of German origin that means double or duplicate. It doesn’t really describe children or “mini-me’s,” but rather duplicates.

I know this can be a stretch. It’s just the way my mind works sometimes. It may sound funny, but I thought, “I wonder how many true doppelgangers Jesus has had through the years! Does He have people that look like Him in their demeanor, presence, posture, attitude, stride, reactions, loyalty and the way they carry themselves? Do they look like Jesus? Do they have the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22)? Do they walk and talk like Jesus is their Savior? Do I? Do you? What are some of Jesus’ traits that you carry?

1 John 2:4-6 says, Whoever says ‘I know Him’ but does not keep His commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, but whoever keeps His word, in Him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in Him: whoever says he abides in Him ought to walk in the same way in which He walked,” (ESV).

It may be time to analyze your gait and measure it against King Jesus. As people watch you, do they see you walking in the same way He walked? What do you admire about Christ? How can you look like Him and walk like Him? What qualities do you want to be known for?

Maybe you are a doppelganger after all! I pray you are living to look like Jesus!
