To my shock and surprise, I was seeing perfect clearly. That’s odd, I thought to myself. My vision is far from 20/20. I need serious help, so why was I seeing so clearly now that my contacts were out? I put my glasses on, and there I was again with double vision. Yikes!
Then, I had a thought, “Do I have my old contacts in still?” I went to the bathroom mirror and tried to see if there were contacts in my eyes. I couldn’t tell. I reached up to my eye as if to remove a contact, and sure enough, there were contacts in both eyes. I had my old set of contacts in my eyes. I must have put the old pair in earlier in the morning, somehow forgot, remembered it was time to rotate in a new pair of contacts, opened the new case, and put them in on top of my old pair from earlier in the morning. I wish I could explain this craziness away and tell you it was around 4 a.m. or some early morning hour, but it was not.
Here I was, walking around with not one, but two pairs of contacts in my eyes. I’m not sure how that is possible, but it is. Worse yet, this is not the first time I have done this. There have been one or two other times through the years where I have done the same thing. Please remember . . . I asked for no harsh judgments!
Update: in case you were wondering, I did make it to the meeting on time and was seeing clearly! As the day went on, I kept thinking about how off I was with the double-vision earlier in the morning. It really made it hard to function properly. Everything felt off—it messed with my mind and balance too!
I thought about what trouble that double set of contacts and double vision gave me. Then, I remembered a Scripture about being double-minded.
The reference is in James 1:5-8, where the Bible talks about the testing of our faith. “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways” (ESV).
Not only can double-vision be problematic but being double-minded is also a recipe for double trouble.
The word of God talks about the unstableness that comes when we are double-minded. We can’t have faith and doubt simultaneously! It will give us blurry vision. We are either faith-filled or faithless. When we live in a state of doubt, we are dishonoring God and living a double-minded, unstable life! When we are rooted and grounded in God and have a faith-filled heart of expectation, we allow Him the welcomed liberty to freely move in our lives!
His Word challenges us to remain faith-filled and not doubting. I didn’t always see this clearly! Have you? What have you asked God for? Have you asked in faith without doubting? Take a moment now and ask God to help increase your faith and relieve you from doubting!
May He help us all from being double-minded and seeing with blurry or doubled lenses. We don’t need lenses of faith that are overshadowed by lenses of doubt! Because of Jesus, we can look to the Father through the lens of great, increased faith!
If you desire a more in-depth look at what the Bible talks about with being double-minded, you can also look at James 4:8 as it warns about worldliness, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded” (ESV).
