God Doesn’t Make Duplicates

After the resurrection, Jesus tells Peter that following Him will come at the cost of his life. Peter hears what’s ahead and instinctively looks at John. “What about him?” he asks—basically saying, If my path is going to be this hard, what will his look like? Jesus doesn’t compare their paths or measure their impact; He simply says, “What is that to you? You follow me.” In other words, Peter’s calling isn’t about what John will do. It’s about the work God has given Peter to step into faithfully, at this time and in this place.

We feel this same temptation today to compare our lives to the people around us. When someone else’s calling and life seem to be taking off or their influence is growing in ways we wish ours would, it’s easy to fall into comparing their success with our own. We think, If only I were more like them, I could make a bigger difference, have more impact, or get noticed. But God doesn’t make duplicates, and He already has one of them. God has uniquely equipped you for this season, these people, and this work…in ways that no one else could.

The remarkable truth is that God loves who He has created you to be and the work He is doing in and through you. Your calling isn’t about keeping pace or measuring up. It’s about stepping faithfully into what God has set before you—the people, opportunities, and challenges only you can reach. Even actions that feel ordinary or unseen intersect with His power in ways you can’t measure, and your faithfulness matters far more than you realize.

Comparison fades when we trust that God is in control of your story and calling you into your purpose with intention. Your role is simple: follow Him. The rest? He’s already at work accomplishing far beyond what you could ask, imagine, or plan.
