This idea of recording your conversation with the Lord may seem like a daunting task, but I want to remind you that it’s just that—a conversation, one that is simply between you and our Heavenly Father. Prayer can be a spiritual habit that we as Christians yearn to do, grow in daily, and over time love to do with our whole hearts. Writing out our prayers is a crucial part of the process of growing our prayer life, and something that can help draw us even closer to the Lord.
How Journaling Prayers Builds Faith and Memory
One of the biggest ways that journaling our prayers helps strengthen our faith is the memory aspect. When we have a record of our prayers, we have a record of God’s faithfulness. Keeping a physical copy of our requests and cries to the Lord is one of the best ways for us to look back— days, months, or even years down the road to see how He provided and answered. In the Old Testament, the Israelites had customs such as making altars, setting up memorials, celebrating festivals, and writing songs of praise to the Lord as a way of remembering and thanking Him for His faithfulness. In the same way, journaling our prayers is a way of helping us to remember and praise God for all the ways that He has been faithful and gracious to us. Time and again, when Israel strayed from the Lord, Scripture tells us it was because the previous generation had not told their children of all God had done in their lives. Another benefit is that it can help us to truly think through what we want to say to the Lord and to focus on Him. I don’t know about you, but sometimes I can get distracted while talking to our Father. This is not to say that we should stop praying out loud or silently, but that it can be easier at times to focus on our conversation with the Lord when we write it down. The good news is that our journal to the Lord doesn’t have to be a well-written essay. God isn’t asking for perfection, He simply wants to hear from you. Journaling out your prayers is a great way to communicate with Him in a clear and precise way.
Simple Ways to Journal Your Prayers
Thankfully, there is no right or wrong way to journal your prayers. Some of us may prefer to write out every little detail of our prayer, while others may simply make lists of our requests followed by praises and how God continues to provide. If you are artistic, your journal may include drawings or art. Writing out Scripture in your journal is a great way to remember the truths of who God is. You may use different methods for different seasons of life.
Use the P.R.A.Y. Method to Journal Your Prayers
One way to stay on track is to use the acronym P.R.A.Y.
Praise: We are talking with the God of the universe, and He is always worthy of praise. We start our conversation remembering His goodness and giving Him thanks!
Repent: We serve a holy God. Is there anything in our life that we are placing above Him or sin that is coming between us? We confess these things to the Lord.
Ask: We have a sovereign God who is in control of all things. We come to Him for ourselves or on behalf of others, seeking guidance, provision, and His will to be done.
Yield: Jesus surrendered to the Father’s will and His timing. We yield to God’s ways and do not expect Him to do things our way.
Listen While You Journal Your Prayers
We should also remember that prayer is a conversation and therefore goes both ways. Are we actively spending time listening to the Lord? As you are journaling, write out the things you feel He is placing on your heart. Sometimes God plants seeds for things that He desires for us to pray for. When we write them down, we can watch how He grows those things and brings them to fruition. This also provides some accountability when doubt creeps in because we have a physical reminder of the things God has spoken to us.
