Determining Your Need for a Church Event Theme
Previously on church staff, one of my favorite church events each year is a celebration around Mother’s Day. Each year in my church, many women, including their daughters, gather to break bread, worship, and hear the Word of God, reminding them of their importance and purpose.
This past year, a small group of women in the church teamed up, prayed, and asked me to lead this special event. We needed an event theme that would create a Holy Spirit-led celebration, to not only ignite hearts, but provide an opportunity for all the women to use their gifts. Nervous and excited, I proudly accepted this small mission from God.
What it Looks Like to Plan a Church Event Theme
Events help carry out the mission of your church or ministry to inspire others to advance His Kingdom. In Scripture, we are reminded not to neglect the talents that God has gifted us. We need to encourage each other and share our talents with others. (Hebrews 10:24-25). Planning an event is a special way to bring unity, joy, and vision to your community that ignites revival. With God leading, your event has the power to change lives and equip people for their God-given purposes.
But where is the best place to start?
- Pray for God to lead you through this planning process. Prayer is critical!
- Set A Clear Purpose and Objectives. Determine your “why.”
- Define Who You Are Trying to Reach. Have a group of “who” in mind to help determine the theme.
- Determine the Theme and Title. Your theme and title must resonate with your “who” and tie in with your “why.”

For Example: You are a Gift from God
Our Mother’s Day church event theme was “You are a Gift from God.”
Leading up to the day of the event, we coordinated the development and planning of this event weekly. From the very beginning, I first prayed and continued daily leading up to Mother’s Day. God spoke to each of us involved with encouragement and guidance.
We setup fifteen tables, uniquely crafted with a specific theme and tea set, put together by women in the church. Each table told a special testimony of that woman’s life. From their favorite vacation to Hawaii to a tea set that was used by their great-great grandmother, each table was uniquely crafted with vibrant colors, materials, and testimonies.
Our speaker gave an amazing message reminding each of us how we are uniquely made with a purpose crafted to help advance God’s Kingdom. Using the tables and prepared food as prime examples, many women left this event with hearts transformed. Even myself, my heart was ignited once again to continue growing and seeing more lives transformed.

So, are you ready to host your next event? Whether this is your first or your tenth, we know that planning a church event takes time and can be overwhelming. There is a lot of work that goes into your event. Yet passion and excitement drive your heart to see the church dive deeper into the Word of God, build community, and fulfill the mission to make disciples.
God gifted you with creativity that is to be shared and celebrated. Be excited! With an organized and detailed checklist, a team to support you, and the right resources, you will feel confident, prepared, and excited to see your church event theme create an impact that will not only touch the hearts of those attending, but will have a ripple effect influencing those planning, supporting, and volunteering alongside you.
Don’t underestimate the potential of your event! Be encouraged to share what God has placed on your heart! With the Holy Spirit leading and your God-given purpose, you have the ability to create an event that moves people, ignites hearts, and will make an impact for God’s Kingdom.
Invite others to join you in your planning! Raise up other Kingdom Laborers! Be sure to write down your goals and objectives, share them with others, and evaluate those goals and objectives after you have completed your event.
