There is a lot of pressure these days on high school students to have their future plans solidified by their junior or senior year. People begin to ask, “So what are your plans after high school?” You may hear many responses like, taking a gap year, trade school, taking over the family farm, helping with the family business, internship, apprentice program or even college—near or far!
My kids all decided on college as their next step after high school. They took opportunities their senior year to visit a few college campuses, mostly out of state, to help make their decision. Our youngest daughter looked at colleges in Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma, and one last minute add on in sunny California.
This college happened to sit next to Sunset Cliffs. The school was breathtaking and right on the ocean. We toured the small but beautiful campus and took the tour up and down the hilly streets. We entered one of the freshman dorms as we continued listening to the tour guide explain life as a student on campus. She took us in and out of rooms, through the laundry facility, past the kitchenette and stopped at the end of the hall to show us the highly acclaimed boardroom. She was so excited for us to see it. My husband’s ears perked up. He’s a businessman, so it caught his attention. We had never heard of a college campus that had a boardroom in the dorms! He turned around to us and said something along the lines of: “Now this school is serious! I like this.”
