Kissing Frogs

It was early in the morning, and I already had laundry going and sourdough bread started. I was running around to get the weekly chores completed. In my scrambling, I thought I saw something out of the corner of my eye. I didn’t slow down long enough to look. I carried on.

I passed through the hallway again and saw our little dog was intrigued with something and had it cornered between the wall and the dog gate. I looked closer. I screamed so loud the neighbors across the street probably heard me. It was the type of long, high-pitched, squeal where your throat hurts afterward for hours. I ran around the house like a crazy woman screaming until my husband came running from his office asking what in the world was wrong.

It was a toad! A toad was in the house, and the dog was nudging it, playing with it, and almost kissing it! What’s that crazy saying you hear at bridal showers, “You have to kiss a lot of frogs to find your prince?”

Well, our dog was kissing a toad. My prince charming came to the rescue and scooped up the toad with a dustpan and escorted him back outside. You are probably thinking, “How did a toad get inside your home?” I wondered the same thing. He must have made himself at home as we left the front door open for the dog to come back inside.

This farm girl has become citified, and there is no room for a toad in the home! I sat puzzled reliving the moment. I quickly thought of Pharaoh in the Bible and the second plague that God brought forth through Moses and Aaron when Pharaoh would not release God’s people. Why on earth did Pharaoh decide to live with the frogs another day? I wonder if the women were screaming like I did. I just had one toad in the home. Read what the people endured.

Exodus 8:1-15 says, “Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Go in to Pharaoh and say to him, “Thus says the Lord, ‘Let my people go, that they may serve me. But if you refuse to let them go, behold, I will plague all your country with frogs. The Nile shall swarm with frogs that shall come up into your house and into your bedroom and on your bed and into the houses of your servants and your people, and into your ovens and your kneading bowls. The frogs shall come up on you and on your people and on all your servants.”’ And the Lord said to Moses, ‘Say to Aaron, “Stretch out your hand with your staff over the rivers, over the canals and over the pools, and make frogs come up on the land of Egypt!”’ So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt. But the magicians did the same by their secret arts and made frogs come up on the land of Egypt. Then Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron and said, ‘Plead with the Lord to take away the frogs from me and from my people, and I will let the people go to sacrifice to the Lord.’ Moses said to Pharaoh, ‘Be pleased to command me when I am to plead for you and for your servants and for your people, that the frogs be cut off from you and your houses and be left only in the Nile.’ And he said, ‘Tomorrow.’ Moses said, ‘Be it as you say, so that you may know that there is no one like the Lord our God. The frogs shall go away from you and your houses and your servants and your people. They shall be left only in the Nile.’ So Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh, and Moses cried to the Lord about the frogs, as he had agreed with Pharaoh. And the Lord did according to the word of Moses. The frogs died out in the houses, the courtyards, and the fields. And they gathered them together in heaps, and the land stank. But when Pharaoh saw that there was a respite, he hardened his heart and would not listen to them, as the Lord had said” (ESV).

The Bible describes the frogs plaguing the whole country. It says the Nile River shall swarm with frogs, and they will come up out of all the waters into their house, bedroom, on their bed, into the houses of the servants and people, into ovens and kneading bowls, and up on Pharaoh and his people and all the servants. These frogs were everywhere, yet Pharaoh told Moses don’t plead with God to remove them until tomorrow.

I couldn’t live with one frog in my home for another moment. Would you have kept it around another day? Reading about the severity of this plague with frogs had me questioning why Pharaoh would be open to such craziness for another day?

I asked myself, “What absurd things am I living with and allowing in my home?” What is in your home that should not be there? Is it time to sweep your house clean? There is only room for one Prince in our home and that is the Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 9:6 says, “For to us a Child is born, to us a Son is given; and the government shall be upon His shoulder, and His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (ESV).

Jesus is the Prince of Peace. He is not the creator of chaos. Our hardened hearts make room for chaos. Pray now and ask the Prince of Peace to remove any craziness that you may have allowed or welcomed to plague your home. Don’t wait until tomorrow!
