Relationships are a big part of our lives.  Life happens in the midst of people, relationships, and community.  But what’s the most important relationship in your life?

Relationships Take Us Through the Best and Worst Times

We have family, friends, neighbors, acquaintances, and loved ones in various circles and communities like school, college, work, church, sports, vacations, humanitarian work and beyond that enrich our lives. As we journey through the highs and lows of life and the blessings and heartaches, we often learn to value relationships increasingly in our lives.

Studies and statistics continually confirm isolation leads to various health risks, mental challenges, loneliness, depression, anxiety, addiction, and so much more.  Though relationships can be challenging and even messy at times, they certainly grow, strengthen, and bless us as well.

The Most Important Relationship in Life

We were created to be in relationships with others in life!  There is a joy and fullness that we receive when we invest in relationships.  Often there are many people we cherish.  As you think about the relationships in your life, what’s the most important relationship you have?

Have you considered your relationship with God?  Do you have a relationship with God?  Would you consider the most important relationship in your life being with God?

For many years I did not look to God as someone to consider having a relationship with, and I certainly did not realize He wanted to pursue a relationship with me. But one day everything changed!

I surrendered my life to Christ and went from running from God to running to God. I began to daily pursue intimacy with God and prioritize Him as the most important relationship in my life.

God really loves us.  No one loves us like He does.  If you want to learn more about how much God loves you and how you can have a personal, intimate relationship with Him, check out the post “What is the Gospel?”

Friendship with God: The Most Important Relationship in Life

Did you know there is a scripture in the Bible where God called someone His friend?  It’s found in James 2:23, “and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness, and he was called God’s friend.

God longs to look to you as His friend. Do you feel the same?

Seasons come and go, and people have even said, “the days are long, but the years are short.”  It can feel like life happens in the blink of an eye.  As time refuses to stand still, people and important relationships in our lives may come and go, but God remains faithful and constant!

He is our steadfast Rock that cannot be shaken.  He has gifted us with incredible people and important relationships in our lives to share moments and experiences with, but He is the most precious of them all!

Remember the Most Important Relationship in Life

As we live and invest in relationships woven throughout our lives, we should be careful not to forget the most important relationship of all.  We should be intentional to grow in intimacy with God and make it a priority to pursue God and grow in our relationship with Him daily!

May I suggest a valuable resource for you? It changed my life. The book is titled, Is God Waiting for a Date with You?   I had no idea that God wanted to spend time with me! I didn’t know He wanted to pursue a relationship with me, nor did I know even where to begin to invest in this most important relationship in life. This book helped me learn how to set time aside for God and how to get up-close and personal with Him.

You can purchase a hard copy from our resource store, or find a free download of the eBook PDF in the “In-App Content to Forge Your Life” section of the Forge App.

Is God Waiting for a Date with You helped me discover what it means to have a date alone with God and what it can look like.  I have learned to prioritize the most important relationship in my life—my relationship with the Lord!  And the beautiful thing is, just like in every relationship, it always looks different.  It’s personal.  It’s beautiful.  Growing your intimacy with God looks uniquely different for everyone!

6 Ways to Invest in the Most Important Relationship in Life

I now set time aside daily to grow in my intimacy with God by:

  1. Reading my Bible
  2. Journaling
  3. Praying
  4. Listening to worship music
  5. Joining Bible studies and small groups—all these are ways to strengthen your walk with God and invest in the most important relationship in your life.
  6. Setting days aside quarterly to spend an entire day alone with God.

I plan out my day alone with God in advance and schedule it on my calendar just like I do for other important relationships in my life.  And, I have learned you must guard and protect it just like any other important date!  I head to a coffee shop, park, or quiet space and take my Bible, journal, and maybe other books, and I spend the day reading, praying and talking with God

The amazing thing is, God always shows up.  He is never late and is always on time, ready to meet with me!  I take time to share my heart, ask questions, and then pause to listen to hear Him speak to my heart.

It really works, just like with other important relationships in my life.  Sometimes we can overcomplicate the Gospel and our relationship with God.  He simply is waiting to be in a relationship with us.  He longs to call you friend.  Can you call God “friend” today?  Will you pursue Him as the most important relationship in your life?

God is waiting for a date with you!
