Scripture Focus:
Mark 10:50 (NIV) — “Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus.”
As a new year begins, many of us think about what to add: new goals, new habits, new plans. But before stepping into something new, it’s worth asking a different question: What am I carrying that I need to release before stepping into this next season?
In Mark 10, Bartimaeus sits by the road, blind and begging. When Jesus calls him, Bartimaeus doesn’t hesitate. The first thing he does is throw off his cloak and move toward Jesus. That cloak mattered. It kept him warm. It held his place. It helped him survive. But he couldn’t move forward while holding onto it.
The things we carry aren’t all bad. Some helped us in the last season, giving us stability through challenges at work or home, or helping us get through difficult days—like Bartimaeus’ cloak. Sometimes we hold onto regrets, worries, or the expectations of others, weights that weren’t ours to carry. And sometimes we cling to things we love: a project, a role, or a dream that God may now be inviting us to release so we can step fully into what He is doing next.
Faithfulness doesn’t always mean taking on more. Sometimes it means releasing what no longer fits so we can take hold of what God is offering. We cannot receive with open hands if our hands are already full. As you step into this year, pause. Notice the weight you’re carrying. Consider what belongs in this season, and what can be laid down so you can move freely into what God is calling you toward.
Weekly Challenge:
This week, take time to ask God if there is something you are carrying that no longer belongs in this season. Surrender it. Then remain open to what God may be inviting you to receive instead.
