Scripture Focus:
Mark 10:43–45 (NIV) — “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant… For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve.”
Most of us grow up in cultures that say the goal of life is to be great—meaning successful, influential, and even powerful. Jesus turns this goal upside-down. In His Kingdom, greatness isn’t about climbing, being noticed, or getting ahead, but rather it’s about living a life that points to God and serves others.
The New Testament uses several Greek words to describe what it looks like to be a Kingdom-Laboring servant:
- Doulos: a bondservant who belongs fully to Jesus (Romans 1:1; 1 Corinthians 6:20).
- Latreuo: serving God out of love, not obligation (Romans 12:1).
- Diakonos: practical service, helping meet real needs (Acts 6:1–4).
- Huperetes: an under-rower, working humbly with others under a leader (Acts 13:36; 26:16).
These words show us that being a Kingdom Laborer means trusting Jesus with your life, loving Him deeply, and serving others in both big and small ways. It’s a life that may feel “upside-down” to the world, but it’s full of meaning, purpose, and lasting impact.
