What Are You Living On?

Scripture Focus:

Matthew 4:4 (NIV)“Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”

After forty days of fasting in the wilderness, Jesus was hungry, tired, and stretched thin. The tempter (Satan) offered Him a quick solution: turn stones into bread. On the surface, it seems practical. But it wasn’t just about bread, it was about a choice every human faces: will we rely on our own strength, or will we trust God?

That same tension shows up in our lives more often than we realize.

When we feel stressed, overwhelmed, or unsure, it’s easy to reach for what we can control. When we are faced with challenges, big or small, many of us try to solve the problem on our own. Sometimes, instead of bringing our need to God, we reach for whatever feels comforting or familiar: success, productivity, food, distraction, relationships, even ministry itself.

There’s nothing wrong with finding solutions or enjoying good things. Bread, work, and comfort are not the problem. The problem is when we start depending on them to steady our hearts instead of turning to God. Without realizing it, we can look to these things to do what only God can do.

“Man shall not live on bread alone.” Real life, the life that lasts, doesn’t come from what we produce, earn, fix, or hold onto. It comes from God: trusting His presence and letting His Word sustain us, especially when life feels uncertain.

This season before Easter called Lent, gives us a chance to notice where we’ve been leaning too heavily on our own effort. When we rely on God and His provision first, we find steadiness, clarity, and freedom to act from the right source.

Weekly Challenge:

Notice one moment this week when you feel tired or stretched thin. Before reacting, pause and ask: What am I depending on right now? Bring that moment to God and let Him shape your next step.
