Let me give you a tool. It’s changed my life and the lives of many around me. It’s the P.R.A.Y. pattern—a simple, memorable way to shape your conversations with God so you are always praying specific prayers, not generic ones. Here’s how it breaks down:
- Praise
- Repent

- Yield

Praise—Start With God, Not With Yourself
It all begins with praise. “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name” (Matthew 6:9, NIV). Before you ask God for anything, you remind yourself and declare who He is.
Think about it: When you enjoy a movie, you naturally start praising it. My friends and I are huge Marvel fans. After every movie, we end up in the lobby, talking for hours about the action, the characters, and the plot. We don’t just enjoy these films—we praise them. Praise flows from delight.
It is the same with God. The more you really see Him, the more you want to praise Him. Praise isn’t for God’s ego; it lifts your heart. Praise lifts your eyes from the mess of life to the greatness of God.
When you pray effectively, always begin with praise. Let your prayer ring with joy and with gratitude. Tell God who He’s been in your life—a healer, a comforter, a provider. Praise deposits truth and expectation; praise carries you into powerful prayers.
Repent—Get Honest, Clean House
If you want to know how to pray effectively, repentance can’t be optional. “Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. . .” (Luke 11:4, NLT). Repentance isn’t about shame—it’s about freedom.
